Community Shred Day and Food Drive 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 16, 2011 CONTACT Jane Long (336)599-2137 jlong@roxborosavings.com

COMMUNITY SHRED DAY
Roxboro Savings Bank, Person County’s only locally owned and operated community bank, will host a Community Shred Day on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at its 313 South Main Street location from 8:00 am until 11:00 pm. This “Shred Day” will be combined with a canned food drive to benefit the Christian Help Center & The Food Pantry and a pet supply drive to benefit the Person County Animal Shelter.
Individuals are invited to bring up to four (4) boxes or 100 pounds of paper (bank statements, old tax returns, etc.) to be shredded on site by Shred-it, the shredding company that currently services Roxboro Savings Bank. “This is a great opportunity for our citizens and customers to get rid of personal papers in a secure environment to help protect them from sensitive private information being stolen or misused,” says Roxboro Savings Bank Executive Vice President and CEO Jane D. Long.
In an effort to further help in our community, the Bank is asking for a donation of canned food items and/or pet supplies to benefit the Christian Help Center, The Food Pantry and the Person County Animal Shelter. Items of particular need are: Canned meats (Spam, Treet, potted meat, tuna, Vienna sausage, corned beef), jellies and jams, non-perishables, dog collars, dog leashes, cat litter, old or used towels (for pet bedding). Patrons of the Shred Day may utilize drive-through service and have their materials unloaded by Roxboro Savings Bank employees or bring them up to the shred truck themselves.
This community shred event is open to individuals only and no business materials will be accepted. Also, materials can only be accepted during the Saturday shred event times and not at any other time at the bank for security reasons. “We are excited to be able to provide a vital community service to our citizens to help protect themselves and assist some of our exceptional charitable organizations at the same time,” says Long. “Our first Shred Day/Community Food and Pet Drive during 2010 was an extreme success thanks to the generosity of the folks in our community. It is our hope that this will continue to be supported.” For more information, please call (336) 599-2137.

ROXBORO SAVINGS BANK GAINS DEPOSITS

Jane Long, Executive Vice President and CEO of Roxboro Savings Bank, SSB announced today that Roxboro Savings Bank’s deposits grew during the period from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009 by more than $13,347,000. Total deposits held by Roxboro Savings Bank now account for nearly 31% of deposits in FDIC insured financial institutions in Person County, ranking Roxboro Savings as the deposit market share leader in Person County. While total deposits in the entire county grew during the same period only nominally by about $216,000, or a minuscule 0.05%, Roxboro Savings Bank’s deposits grew at a rate of about 11.1%. Long attributed this growth to the continued confidence shown by Person County depositors in Roxboro Savings Bank, a state-chartered mutual savings bank which was founded in 1923. Long stated that, while times have been difficult in the economy and many people have suffered job losses, she is appreciative of the work of the staff at Roxboro Savings Bank which has worked diligently in trying to help the bank’s customers through these difficult times.

Under recently enacted legislation, all depositors are insured by the FDIC for up to $250,000 through at least December 31, 2013. Roxboro Savings Bank customers are served by the Bank’s two local locations at 313 South Main Street, Roxboro and 5420 Durham Road, Timberlake, through the Bank’s network of over 32,000 ATM’s nationwide and by its free on-line banking services, including on-line bill pay. Roxboro Savings Bank, SSB is the only locally operated financial institution in Person County and is proud to serve the banking needs of its customers in Person and surrounding counties.

Long also commented that, while the FDIC does not publish similar figures for loans generated, she is proud to report that Roxboro Savings Bank continues to loan money to qualified borrowers in the markets it serves and has never stopped loaning money to individuals and small businesses. Roxboro Savings Bank is a full service financial institution that is eager to assist local residents and business owners with their financing needs with a wide array of loan products fitting just about any need.

Long concluded that she looks forward to the continued growth of Roxboro Savings Bank which will be celebrating its 87th anniversary in 2010 and invites prospective customers to stop by either location to learn the real meaning of the bank’s catch phrase “Come Closer to Home.”

Identity Theft: What you need to know

Identity Theft is a fast-growing crime across the country affecting people of all classes and walks of life. We are committed to protecting our customers and our community, so we hope you read this vital information to find out how to avoid becoming a victim of this crime.

WHAT IS IDENTITY THEFT?

Identity Theft is an illegal means of securing an unsuspecting individual’s personal or financial information with the intent of assuming their identity to make transactions or purchases. Identity Theft is a continually increasing crime that collects victims every day, from all ages, and from different income levels. Statistics provided by the Federal Trade Commission indicate that in 2006, North Carolina exceeded the national average of all other states for identity theft. It is our goal to educate you, our customer, and assist you from becoming this crime’s next victim. If you feel that you are an unlikely target for identity theft, you might want to think again.

HOW DO THEY GET MY INFORMATION?

There are many different methods that a thief uses to obtain your personal information. This is a list of some of the methods currently being used, but is not all inclusive:
1. Phishing: Pronounced “fishing”, this is an e-mail scam where someone pretends to be from a bank or retail establishment in an attempt to steal your social security number, credit card numbers, user IDs, and passwords.
2. Vishing: This is a form of phishing, except in this case, the unsuspecting consumer is provided with a telephone number to call in an attempt to obtain personal information.
3. Skimming: Thieves use a special device when processing your debit or credit transaction to illegally obtain your card number.
4. Pretext calling: In this case, scam artists attempt to obtain your personal information from your bank or other retail establishment under false pretenses.
5. Dumpster diving: This is when your discarded trash is rummaged through with the intent of obtaining personal information, credit card numbers, or non-destroyed credit offers for illegal use.
6. Physical theft: This is perhaps the most common means of Identity Theft; stolen or lost wallets and purses contain some of the most critical information such as name, address, phone numbers, debit/credit cards, social security cards, passports, and birth certificates.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I SUSPECT THAT I’M A VICTIM?

If you suspect misuse of your personal information to commit fraud, take action immediately. Keep a record of all conversations and correspondence when you take the following suggested steps.

1. Contact your financial institution(s) and Credit Card issuers immediately to prevent further exposure to your accounts.
2. Contact check verification companies or the bank to request that they notify retailers using their databases not to accept stolen checks.
3. File a police report with your local police department.
4. Contact the three major credit bureaus and request a copy of your credit report.
5. Check your mailbox for stolen mail. If you suspect mail has been stolen, notify your local post office and police department.
6.
Maintain a written chronological list of what has happened, what was lost and the steps you took to report the incident to the various agencies, financial institutions and the firms impacted.
7. Contact the Federal Trade Commission to notify their agency of the identity theft incident.

WHERE CAN I GET ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS ABOUT FILING A CLAIM?

Visit the Federal Trade Commission's website for more information about Identity Theft, including:

  • Answers to commonly asked questions
  • Instructions on who to contact
  • Forms for filing a claim
  • Credit Reporting Agency contact information
  • Helpful guidance in preventing identity theft
  • Tips on how to monitor your credit record
You can also find up-to-date information about your individual rights as a consumer from the FTC here.

WHAT INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE FOR MY BUSINESS?

Businesses are just as susceptible to identity theft as individuals, and are required to notify individuals and businesses alike of any personal information breaches that have occurred. Visit the FTC's identity theft website for businesses for more information.
